President's Welcome
On behalf of the NZAA Committee, I welcome you to the 2012 South Pacific International and New Zealand National Accordion Championships and Festival. In recent years, an adult orchestra has been assembled to play as part of the weekend. This year, we will be having something different with a youth orchestra for players from all around New Zealand and overseas guests under the age of 18 years. The Sunday Farewell Concert will showcase some of the weekend's class winners, guest artists and will include a performance by the New Zealand Youth orchestra conducted by Christine Johnstone.
A farewell dinner will be held on Sunday evening at The Brigham Restaurant in Hobsonville starting at 7:00pm. The evening will include the presentation of the South Pacific Championship trophies and special awards given annually. Naturally, there will be plenty of accordion entertainment, dancing, great food and lots of fun. Tickets must be pre-purchased. This is always a popular event so act now to avoid disappointment.
To cap off the NZAA's 40th year celebrations, an exhibition called From Wakefield to Masefield was opened at the Dargaville Museum in March 2012. The exhibition tells the story of the accordion in New Zealand from Edward Wakefield's ship in 1839 to Grayson Masefield winning the Coupe Mondiale title in 2009. The exhibition runs until November 2012 and we encourage members to make the trip to see this impressive exhibition.
As many of you will be aware, this is my first year as NZAA President. Thank you all for the confidence you have displayed in endorsing my leadership of the NZAA. Thank you also to the committee. Your support and commitment has been exceptional and critical in keeping our organisation moving forward in a positive direction.
Sonja Palinich President New Zealand Accordion Association
